Installation and maintenance of heat exchangers
Installation
1. Position: leave enough space at both ends of the exchanger for dismantling and maintenance.
2. Foundation: it must be capable of preventing settlement. Embed a sliding plate at the moving support end.
3. Anchor bolts and shims:
(1) Anchor bolts at the moving support should carry two lock nuts, with a 1–3 mm gap between nut and base plate.
(2) Fit shims on both sides of each anchor bolt. After levelling, the tapered shims may be welded to the support base plate but must not be welded to the flat shim or sliding plate below.
(3) The shims must not restrict thermal expansion of the exchanger.
Maintenance
Never operate the exchanger beyond the conditions on its nameplate. Monitor the temperature and pressure drop of both shell-side and tube-side media regularly and analyse any leakage or change in condition. When the pressure drop rises or the heat transfer coefficient falls beyond a set limit, clean the unit by a method appropriate to the medium and the construction. Watch the tube bundle for vibration.
